The Old vs. New Internet

Many of us who experienced the first versions of the internet back in the mid to late 90s, remember a different experience, a different world, and just like the old internet, there are those few who can not only recognize that difference but, can articulate the differences.

Here is a series of forum postings that explain what has changed:

and another from "The Intelligencer"

What I found most telling was the following paragraph:

"And then, one day, I think in 2013, Twitter and Facebook were not really very fun anymore. And worse, the fun things they had supplanted were never coming back. Forums were depopulated; blogs were shut down. Twitter, one agent of their death, became completely worthless: a water-drop-torture feed of performative outrage, self-promotion, and discussion of Twitter itself. Facebook had become, well … you’ve been on Facebook."

I too noticed a rapid, widespread, uniform, change in the internet around that very same time 2012-2013. It was so widespread, and rapid, and uniform that it did not appear to be "natural". In a matter of hours, days, months it appeared that all of the people that used to populate the forums, the blogs, that used to post on youtube comments, and yahoo changed and/or were replaced by other people that were completely different. This cast doubts on the authenticity of BOTH, those who were "replaced" and those that did the "replacing".

I also noticed something similar occurred in talk radio around the same time 2012-2013. Though, the popularity of talk radio was in decline, it wasn't dead, and some local stations built a real sense of community like KGO 810. Then one day in around 2011-2013 all but one of the former talk show hosts were replaced by automated Bloomberg programming. People may like hearing about stocks and "the market" but not for 20 hours a day. My ears almost bled from the constant droning about stocks and "the market" and "foreign markets", and mutual funds, liquidity, and capital etc. Then a couple of years later, when some of the old talk show hosts returned it sounded as if they went through a "re-education" camp.

Sometimes comments were removed, edited, altered, entire threads removed, and then replaced. Some deny that they were removed, or replaced, or edited, except for people like myself, who remember.

The effects of this "thing", this "matrix", this "system" were recorded in the internet itself. There may be some benefits that came from the rule of the U.S. equivalent of "General Krull" less crime, people cleaned up their acts, less drug use, no gangs, BUT there were many other changes that are not so positive:
