It is considered unsafe by electricians and does not conform to building standards or code. Yet, IF one takes the proper precautions then it is safe and will work.
It is much less complex and less expensive than installing a generator interlock switch.
This is known as backfeeding one's house with a generator.
To order or build a backfeed cord, first you should determine what the official NEMA name is for the receptacle the generator has and NEMA name for receptacle the house sockets one intends to use has.
Make sure the voltage output of the generator is the same as the voltage input of the house socket.

1. Get an HF Transceiver. Make sure it covers all typical shortwave bands and all modes, AM, CW, LSB, USB

One of the lower cost ham radio transceivers, the XIEGU G1M requires one to order a separate power supply (12 volt, 1 amp), and you will definitely need an output amplifier to reach farther transmit distances. Finally you will need a BNC male to SMA male cord.
The lowest cost transceiver, the Druzhba-M, requires assembly, extensive soldering, etc.
If you need more transmitting power you may want to get an amplifier, the following is a 100 watt amplifier

2. Get a shortwave antenna, here are some recommendations.
The antenna is most likely the most important piece of your Shortwave Radio Station, it has a large influence on how far your signal can be heard and how distant the stations you can hear.

The following is a link to an MFJ Apartment Shortwave Broadcast Antenna. This antenna is smaller which is ideal for Hams with limited space. It is a compromise antenna which means that the performance is less than that of a full size antenna.
3. Get an antenna tuner to ensure most transmission power is sent out through the antenna.
Different broadcast frequencies interact with the cable/antenna setup differently. Much of the time some of the power emitted from final amplifier of HF transceiver is reflected from the cable/antenna setup and/or is absorbed by the cable leading to the antenna.
So, most amateur radio operators utilize an antenna tuner to minimize power reflections from the cable/antenna setup and to minimize power absorption from the cable leading to the antenna. This ensures that most of the power is emitted by the antenna.
Ideally, anytime one changes the transmitting or receiving frequency, then the one must use the antenna tuner to ensure that most of the transmitting power is emitted by the antenna.
Though, if the frequency is close to the last frequency where you used the antenna tuner, then the mismatch between the transmitter and antenna setup may be acceptable.
4. Get an SWR Meter to measure the power reflected from the cables and the antenna, this is used in conjunction with the antenna tuner.
5. Get the appropriate cables to connect the HF receiver to the the SWR meter, the SWR meter to the antenna tuner, and the antenna tuner to the antenna
6. Connect the HF Transciever, SWR meter, tuner, and antenna as follows
7. Remember that shortwave radio must work with the natural phenomena affecting the ionosphere or any other phenomena that has an effect on radio waves. The audio may have static and may fade in and out.

The Power of Magnetic Loop Antennas:
The power of mag loop comes from it's construction and the frequencies at which it is most often used.
Here is a comparison between a Mag Loop and a straight long wire:
Of course one doesn't necessarily have to construct a mag loop, one can simply purchase one on ebay this is a receive only antenna.
Note: I ordered and received the magnetic loop antenna below. I have recently had time to test and experiment with it. This loop antenna does indeed have superior performance characteristics when compared to long wire antennas. I was able to receive more shortwave broadcasts, more clearly when compared to a long wire antenna I set up previously.
In addition, broadcasts that came in somewhat clear using the longwire antenna, came in stronger and clearer using the magnetic loop antenna with less fade out.
The loop is about 2 feet in diameter, it is best to place it in a window sill. People can experiment with placement to receive the best possible reception.
Some people may need adapters to connect the antenna to a shortwave radio. The antenna has a male sma connector. If a shortwave radio has a connector it is often a one channel 3.5mm plug. Below is a link to an adapter that converts sma to 3.5mm
One more thing about Ham Radio Situation. In a collapse situation, the networks that transmit data from smart phones, internet, cable TV will most likely be nonfunctional. This implies that people may have to use some of the Ham Radio communication methods that rely primarily on the physical characteristics of the earth, atmosphere, sun, etc.
There is another communication method that may still be functional in a collapse situation and that is communication satellites. Since many satellites are in orbit far above the earth, are geostationary, and have their own power supplies, they will be immune to most collapse situations on the surface of earth. Hence preppers can utilize these satellites to communicate with each other and around the world.

Hour Two:
RC Collins wants to go on a “road trip” to San Francisco with his fellow cadets from Bradley to see Nobu Uematsu, famed Final Fantasy composer” and he wants to take his mom’s Lexus but she won’t let him. RC laments that his friend Raul will have to drive them in Raul’s Camaro but RC is reluctant to be seen in a “Beaner-mobile.” He goes on to tell one of Phil’s callers that when “I bring Bin Laden’s head into your kitchen on the end of my bayonet and place it on your kitchen counter, you don’t even have to say thank you. Just don’t make me ride around in a Bean Wagon.”.
Hour Three:
Phil reminisces about being trapped in Hollywood during the first LA Marathon. The he comments quickly on what sounds like Florence Henderson’s teeth sticking to her gums in the Polydent commercial. Then Phil does a quick commentary on the Italian journalist who was held captive by insurgents and then let go. Apparently she’s spending more time squealing about the Yanks that shot at her car as it was speeding out of town. Phil then observes that Kirstie Alley’s Fat Actress Show is a great idea since her life and the lives of the rest of these people are far more compelling than anything they do in TV or film. We then play a listener flashback of a classic, Bobbi Dooley’s Underwear. Darren Browne, program director of C93 calls in and pukes into the phone to the point that Phil says it sounds like he’s morphing into “another species.” Then we play a commercial for the latest film from Oliver Stone, “Farm” about Mr. Stones belief that millions of Arabs and Arab-Americans are being held incognito by George Bush and his war stooges on dairy farms across America that have been turned into concentration camps and gulags but by day still sell yogurt and margarine.
