Locking Up

There are several reasons why I suggest taping up locks, especially the shackle, when leaving your residence:

One of the main reasons is because there are methods to open locks by inserting a thin, flat, piece of metal where the shackle latches onto the lock "catch":

There are many ways to pick or open a padlock without a key:

One of the expert lock pickers on youtube:

Most of these methods require either picking the lock through the keyhole, destroying the lock shackles, or picking the lock through the shackles. By taping the lock especially the keyhole, you deny lock pickers the ability to pick the lock, without leaving evidence. By taping the shackles you deny lock pickers the ability to open the lock by inserting a piece of metal where the shackle latches onto the lock "catch".

Discus type locks have one very short shackle:

This makes it very difficult to destroy the shackle and also difficult to insert a piece of metal where the shackle latches onto the lock catch. These locks are better than the typical padlock with two vertical shackles. Though it can still be picked, so I would tape up the keyhole multiple times, and I would still tape up the shackle just in case someone, somewhere figures out a way to pick the lock through the short shackle.

There are locks with hidden shackles:

Unfortunately these locks are difficult to place on a typical residence door, due to their construction.

Some of the least pickable locks are disc type locks:

So the ideal lock would be a Discus Type lock with a Disc Tumbler cylindrical key, if it is possible to construct such a lock.
