The Saints of Car Repair

I recently bought a 2005 E350 Ford Econoline Van.

I am planning to turn it into a super stealth van, though before I can go super stealth, I need to get it super fixed.

The engine makes a knocking noise when it is running, it sounds like a little hammer striking the engine block on the passenger side. I searched on the internet and read up a little on the Ford V8 and V10 engines. Unfortunately, from what I have been reading, these engines appear to be badly designed and display a myriad of problems especially when compared to other more reliable V8 and V10 engines.

Ford used aluminum heads, redesigned the spark plugs, and buried the spark plugs deep in the head. This has led to several problems, among them are spark plug ejection, spark plug breakage during removal, valve train problems, problems with "the phaser", it goes on and on.

Among the myriad of problems with this engine is the problem of "rod knock". This occurs when the piston rod bearing wears down so much, that the piston rod bearings are no longer centered with the Cam Journals but move off center during normal operation.

Fortunately, this is a repair that can be performed with the engine in the vehicle. In fact, thanks to youtube the average person has access to some of the best mechanics out there and we also have access to some of the most cost-effective, quick repair methods out there.

There are many youtube channels about car repair but, here are the some of the best, the Saints of Car Repair (alphabetical order):

There is an outstanding challenge, it is the stuff of myth and legend, a mystery that I have heard only in passing:

Is it possible to replace piston rings without removing the head?

Some say it is impossible, though from what I have read online, it may be feasible, at least for some engines and some vehicles. It is one of the holy grails of motor repair!

Some may say, it would very difficult if not impossible to remove pistons without removing the heads because the crankshaft would get in the way of the pistons. Yet, it is possible to remove the crankshaft without removing the engine from the vehicle, at least for some engines and some vehicles. Once the crankshaft is removed then removing the pistons without removing the heads IS within the realm of possibility.

These videos are not only important for my particular repair but, for anyone with a vehicle and especially for those who live in vehicle and/or like to boondock. Not only will these videos give people more information about their particular vehicle but, it will help people save money and will help with repairs if one happens to be in a remote area far from any services.

P.S.

There is another holy grail of car repair out there, it is the main holy grail, an actual holy grail, many have attempted it and failed, is it possible to clean a malfunctioning catalytic converter, without replacing it?
