El Cheapo Part 3

In El Cheapo Part 2, I posted a link to a video that shows how to mount a tire without using a tire machine. What I failed to notice is that before someone can mount a tire onto a rim, most of the time, a used tire must be removed from the rim.

Once again youtube comes to the rescue, here is how to remove a used tire from a rim without a tire machine:

A clever way to "break" the tire bead:

Also one can use Lye to clean and degrease engine parts:

Lye can also be used to clean rust and carbon from cast iron skillets, which may also be helpful in cleaning cast iron engine blocks and heads.

DON'T use Lye with aluminum, it will react with the aluminum and create hydrogen gas.

The ability of lye to clean may be increased by heating the lye-water solution. Increasing the ambient temperature in which a chemical reaction takes place often leads to increased chemical reaction rates.

Furthermore, increased temperatures may lead to the softening and weakening of caked grease and carbon due to viscosity changes, phase changes, different expansion rates of the metal versus the grease or carbon, making the chemical bath even more effective.

Yet another way to save money is to repair rather than replace. For example when a component fails, like a relay, some people would go out and buy another relay. Yet, one can dissasemble the relay, clean the contacts, and once again it works:

All for the cost of a few cents or even less than that of sand paper.

Sometimes window motors can also fail and instead of replacing it, one can dissemble the motor, clean the contacts and once again it works

This "repair" principle can apply to any component:

The fundamental idea behind repair vs. replace is that some sub-component of the part failed or is dirty, identifying those sub-component(s) and replacing them is often less expensive than simply replacing the entire part.
