In Cars

In regards to integrated electronics in the operation of modern automobiles, I have found that even some pre-1984 cars have ignition modules that control ignition spark.

After obtaining the Chevy G20 van, I obtained a copy of the Haynes repair manual and the Chilton Repair manual. After reading through the manual I became aware that even a Van built in 1980 has electronics that control ignition. In the Chevy van this is known as the High Energy Ignition system, (quoting directly from the Chilton manual)

..The General Motors HEI system is a pulse triggered, transistored-controlled, inductive discharge ignition system....the entire HEI system is contained within the distributor cap.

Even though, the "transistored-controlled" system is not a digital computer, it is still a transistor, that requires a semiconductor Fab to design and construct and is still susceptible to EMP and may contain some primitive tracking capabilities.

While reading that section of the manual, I became aware that most cars built before 1970, do not have any form of electronic ignition control. Apparently transistorized electronic control of ignition was introduced in the 1960-70s mostly as aftermarket devices. This is reasonable given that the capabilities of integrated semiconductor devices increased dramatically in the 1960s and 70s while the size decreased, one only need to point to the intel 8080 processor introduced in 1974:

Coincidentally, it was around 1974 when electronic control of ignition was introduced en-masse in automobile engines.

In this case, for this van, this is only a minor disadvantage since the electronic ignition control is essentially only a minor modification from older ignition technology.

The type of ignition technology we should be looking for, is known as points-type ignition or mechanical ignition system:

This ignition system does not use any integrated semiconductor devices, just capacitors and transformers.

Some motors, mostly older motors made before 1990, can be modified to operate without using any integrated electronic devices, more modern motors, built after 1990 cannot. Please do some research on your particular motor, to determine whether or not it can operate with no integrated electronics.
